For parents and educators: a visit to the Global Library

The Global Library is World 18, the last stop of the City of Creativity, a free reading and writing adventure from United By Creativity, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Ms. Liora, the Head Librarian, gives every child a free Library Card and helps them find a book written by young authors.

What children practice

Choosing a book and reading it page by page, with read-aloud and tap-a-word support; connecting what they read to their own ideas; planning a story from the notes they gathered across the City; writing a beginning, a middle and an ending; adding a dedication and an author page; rereading and revising; and reflecting on what they learned, imagined, and could change.

Real books by young authors

Children can read The Wisdom of Kids: Volume 2, written by fourth and fifth graders at Ervin Elementary, and browse every title on the open shelves: the Global Library shelves and the book directory.

Publishing a child’s book

In the game, a grown-up gives permission and the book goes onto the child’s shelf on their device. To publish it in the Global Library for readers everywhere, families join United By Creativity’s free Writing Apprenticeship at Become an Author. It is always free, and UBC receives no royalties from children’s books.

Privacy

No accounts and nothing sent anywhere. Children’s writing stays in their own browser, and they use a nickname only.
