United By CreativityThe Wishing Well

For parents and educators: a visit to the Wishing Well

The Wishing Well is World 17 of the City of Creativity, a free reading and writing adventure from United By Creativity, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Just beyond Cave Spring Park, children make a special kind of wish: a wish for what their story might give someone who reads it.

What children practice

Choosing an idea from their journey through the City; naming their purpose as an author (“I hope my story…”); connecting it to their own life and values (“This matters to me because…”); planning one scene that shows the idea (“A moment in my story…”); rereading and revising their words; and reflecting on what they learned, imagined, and could change.

An Author’s Wish that travels to the Global Library

The Author’s Wish is saved to the child’s Idea Notebook for the book they write in the Global Library. It can be printed or downloaded. Publishing is a separate step that needs a grown-up’s permission.
